This weekend the University of Denver Pioneers pulled off their second-straight NCAA championship and 20th overall title in skiing. They have won six championships this decade in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009! Last year the team was invited to the White House for a picture with the president and were able to again edge out the University of Colorado for the championship this year. Nordic skiier Antje Maempel, from Stuelzerbach, Germany, also won her second NCAA individual championship with a victory in the 15K freestyle. Our hockey team also posted some big wins in a first round series sweep of the WCHA Playoffs. The team kept the game exciting and scored the winning goal in Saturday's game with only 47.4 seconds remaining. With this victory, they are off to the WCHA Final Five for the second consecutive season and the third time in five years. We will face the Wisconsin Badgers this weekend and hopefully continue on to another conference title!
The gymnastics team also earned a big win on the road as they faced University of Washington on Sunday afternoon. After a phenomenal last home meet against BYU last Monday night, the team carried the momentum with them on the road and posted their highest road score of the season. They will finish the 2009 regular season on the raod in a meet against Air Force tomorrow night.
Congratulations to all our Pioneers after a stellar weekend of competition!
