A few months ago, a prospective applicant asked me about the most important traditions at DU. One such long-standing tradition, Winter Carnival, celebrated its 51st anniversary this week with lots of fun on-campus activities followed by a weekend of wintery festivities at Winter Park Resort.
First held in January 1961, Winter Carnival traditions and locations have evolved over time while its spirit has remained the same. Among the inaugural events were a snow sculpture contest and the crowning of the Snow Queen and her attendants. At the time, the round-trip bus fare to Winter Park was less than $4 and the Saturday night dance following a day of skiing was $1.
This year’s Winter Carnival, the theme of which is a Neon Wonderland, includes lots of fun activities like the Friday night CC/DU hockey game, a chili cook-off, Grillin' and Chillin' with D.U.G.S. (DU’s Grilling Society) and a screening of Happy Feet before students boarded busses for a weekend of skiing, snowboarding, a 3LAU concert, tubing and a winter movie marathon.
A big shout out to DUPB for keeping this fantastic DU tradition alive!
