This past weekend I had the opportunity to volunteer my time to participate in the 2016 Denver PrideFest. Upon realizing that CME (the Center for Multicultural Excellence) would have a presence and space at this year’s festivities, I was all in. As an admission counselor representing DU, I truly believe that college should entail many different forms of diversity and inclusion, and that there are always opportunities to give back and spread love and compassion no matter what your background, sex, orientation, preference, religion, etc. is. One of my favorite quotes is from Ram Dass and it states, “We’re all just walking each other home." The theme - compassion… I love being able to connect with different communities and I truly did have a blast attending my first PrideFest.
Denver PrideFest is recognized as one of the top ten pride events in the US. This truly was an opportunity to celebrate a sense of community, heritage, family and culture. More than 380,000 people from all over Colorado came out to enjoy the food, parade, music and entertainment. I loved covering the booth at CME and interacting with other faculty, staff and students of DU. Throughout the whole weekend, the CME booth was able to directly connect with over 600 folks and as Thomas Walker (Director of Educational Programs & LGBTIQA Services) articulated so eloquently, “We connected with potential Pios, and reconnected with many current and past ones—all part of the goal to show our support for our LGBTIQ & Ally communities-this difficult year especially, and let folks know about the many ways they can participate in DU programs and services."
For more information regarding the many ways/opportunities DU has been able to provide support and resources regarding the LGBTIQ and Ally community, be sure to check out the Pride Portal address (www.du.edu/pride). This will help better connect everyone with campus resources here at DU. Go Pios!!!
